| Low Income Energy Assistance Program (LIEAP) |
This program pays a check once a year to eligible low-income households to help with their heating bills. Many families getting food stamps receive this check automatically, without a separate application. Applications are taken once a year in the fall. |
| Crisis Intervention Program (CIP) |
This program is for households in a heating or cooling-related emergency who have income less than 150% of the poverty level. Eligible households get up to $300.00 assistance to buy fuel or to pay the electric or gas bill. |
| Emergency Assistance |
This program provides financial assistance to families with dependent children in emergency situations based on need and family resources. This program is only available each year until the allotted funds are spent. |
| Medicaid |
Medicaid offers a unified medical care program for WFFA recipients. SSI recipients, and the medically indigent who are eligible under the federal categories for the aged, disabled, blind, or dependant children. Medicaid provides assistance in in-patient and out-patient hospital care; in physician's services; in nursing home care; home health care; laboratory and x-ray services outside the hospital; certain dental care; prescription drugs; optometrists' services and eyeglasses; payments to state mental hospitals for inpatient care of those 65 or older and younger than 21; mental health services; and health screening for children. |
| Senior Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP) |
Sponsored by the North Carolina Department of Insurance, SHIIP is available to help you answer your Medicare and Supplemental Insurance questions. Trained volunteers can provide you with inforamtion regqrding claims, coverage, policy comparisons, paperwork and advise you what to do next. | Work First TANF 150% Assistance |
This program provides financial assistance to families whose income is at or below 150% of the poverty level. This program is designed to help families with barriers that threaten employment. |
| Work First Family Assistance |
A federally supported categorical public assistance program to support payments to children in need of and deprived of parental support or care due to their death, absence, unemployment, or incapacity of their parents. The amount of assistance is determined by comparing the family's needs with its income and resources. Limitations are placed on the eligible children related to their age and school attendance. Federal legislation through the Work First Program encourages WFFA recipients to work and secure job training. |
| Work First Employment Services |
These services ensure work opportunities for welfare clients. Provides necessary skills and literacy training, assist with transportation, child care, participation and work related expenses. |
| Food Stamp Program |
Under this program, food benefits (through a debit card known as the Electronic Benefit Transfer Program) are used to supplement the food buying power of eligible low income households. The program is administered nationally by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food and Nutrition Services and locally by the Department of Social Services to improve the nutrition levels of low income households. |
| Foster Care Assistance |
A resource which pays for foster care for children who are unable to remain in their own homes for various reasons. |
| Adoption Assistance |
Service is provided to reduce the financial barriers that may impede the adoption of children who live in foster care and who, without adoption assistance, would be unlikely to achieve a permanent home through adoption. Based on the child's circumstances and needs, i.e. medical, legal, psychological, etc., benefits are available only after the Final Order Adoption has been entered. |
| Work Permits |
Permits to work are issued to teens between the ages of 14-18. |
| State and County Special Assistance |
Provide Assistance to persons who must be placed in homes for the aged or Family Care Homes. The individuals in this category, who are potentially eligible, must apply for Supplemental Security Income if money payments and medical assistance are offered to help. |
| Long Term Care |
This section contains instructions for determining income eligibility of individuals in long term care. Long term care is extended care in a hospital or medical facility listed below. Medicaid helps to pay the cost of care for an eligible individual. The applicant/recipient must also meet all other eligibility requirements including resource limits, resource protection and transfer of assets. |
