Macon County Public Health
School Nurse Program


Macon County Public Health provides school health services to all the public schools in Macon County.

The school nurses provide the following services:

  • Healthcare to students and staff
  • Case management for conditions such as asthma, diabetes, epilepsy, and sever allergies
  • Health promotion, screening and referrals for care with parent permission for screenings
  • Are the liaison between the school personnel, families, and health care providers
  • Review and refer students for immunization compliance
  • Provide education and supervision to the staff on emergency action plans, and individualized health care plans for students as needed
  • Encourage and increase students capacity for self-management of diseases when appropriate
  • Attend student care team meetings to assist with knowledge of medical issues and to help decrease barriers to a students education
  • Parents must OPT IN to the School Health Program to be seen by school nurses for illnesses on the Annual Health Status update forms sent home yearly

Medication Policy

Garrett's Law (Senate Bill 444)

Senate Bill 444, referred to as "Garrett's Law," was signed by Governor Easley on July 17, 2004. Garrett's Law mandates that at the beginning of every school year, local boards of education shall ensure that schools provide parents and guardians with information about meningococcal meningitis and influenza and their vaccines.

To support this effort, the bill states that the Division of Public Health, Department of Health and Human Services and the Department of Public Instruction shall make available the following sample educational materials that can be provided to parents and guardians. More Information
