Currently in Macon County there are 17 licensed Child Day Care facilities. These facilities are inspected biannually. The State of North Carolina Child Care Division permits these facilites and does inspections as well. Please contact this office if you have any questions about Child Day Care facilities.

HANDWASHING GUIDELINES


* Employees shall be instructed that hand washing is the single most important line of defense in preventing the transmission of disease-causing organisms.


When Should Hands Be Washed?

    STAFF:
  • Employees shall wash hands upon arrival at the child care center.
  • Immediately before handling food, preparing bottles, or feeding children.
  • After handling food.
  • Before handling clean utensils or equipment.
  • After using the toilet, assisting a child in using the toilet, or changing diapers.
  • After handling of body fluids (e.g., saliva, nasal secretions, vomitus, feces, urine, blood, secretions from sores, pustulant discharge).
  • After handling soiled items such as garbage, mops, cloths, and clothing.
  • Whenever hands are visibly soiled.
  • After removing disposable gloves.
    Children:
  • Children shall wash hands upon arrival at the child care center.
  • After each diaper change or visit to the toilet.
  • Immediately before eating meals or snacks.
  • Before and after water activity.
  • After playing on the playground.
  • After handling animals or animal cages.
  • Whenever hands are visibly soiled.
    How to properly wash hands:
  1. Always use warm, running water and a mild, preferably liquid soap;
  2. Wet the hands and apply a small amount of liquid soap to the hands (dime to quarter size);
  3. Rub the hands together vigorously with the soap and tempered water for 15 seconds;
  4. Be sure to wash all surfaces of the hands, including the backs of hands, palms, wrists, under fingernails, and between fingers;
  5. Rinse hands well for 10 seconds, leaving the water running;
  6. Dry hands with a paper towel;
  7. Turn off the faucet with the paper towel.

    Potty & Diapering Procedures
  • Is the surface smooth and easily cleanable?
  • Are you using a solution of soap/water prior to sanitizing?
  • Is the sanitizer at 100 ppm?
  • Is the contact time appropriate?
  • Are you cleaning and sanitizing the toilets?
  • Is there enough toilet paper?
  • Is there soap?
  • Is the water between 90 and 110 degrees?

  • Before feeding infants or children;
  • Before handling clean utensils or equipment;
  • After toileting or handling of body fluids (e.g., saliva, nasal secretions, vomitus, feces, urine, blood, secretions from sores, pustulant discharge);
  • After diaper changing;
  • After handling soiled items such as garbage, mops, cloths, and clothing;
  • After removing disposable gloves.
  • Children shall wash hands upon arrival at the child care center;
  • After each diaper change or visit to the toilet;
  • Before eating meals or snacks;
  • Before and after water activity and outdoor play;
  • And after handling animals or animal cages.
    Proper handwashing procedures shall include:
  1. Using soap and tempered running water;
  2. Rubbing hands vigorously with soap and tempered water for 15 seconds;
  3. Washing all surfaces of the hands, to include the backs of hands, palms, wrists, under fingernails, and between fingers;
  4. Rinsing well for 10 seconds;
  5. Drying hands with a paper towel or mechanical dryer;
  6. Turning off faucet with paper towel.

Diapering & Diaper Changing Guidelines


  • Diaper changing surface must be smooth, non-absorbent (waterproof), and easily cleanable (no cracks or tears).

  • Diaper changing surface shall be kept free of storage.

  • Clean the diaper changing surface with a mild solution of water and detergent after each use.

  • Label the cleaning solution.

  • Sanitize the diaper changing surface with a solution of 100 ppm chlorine. The sanitizing solution must be in a separate, properly labeled, hand pump spray bottle.

  • Check the strength of the sanitizer with chlorine test strips. Keep the test strips available at all times.

  • To sanitize: spray the chlorine solution on the diaper changing surface, allow it to air dry or spray the chlorine solution on the diaper changing surface, wait a minimum of 2 minutes, then dry with a paper towel.

  • Store the cleaning solution and the sanitizer out of reach of the children.

  • All items such as, baby powder, lotion, ointment, Vaseline, etc. that has a warning label “Keep out of reach of children” must be stored in a locked cabinet.

  • Caregivers must use disposable gloves if they have cuts or sores on their hands, or chapped hands. * Hands must be washed after removing the gloves.

  • Caregivers may dispose of feces in diapers in the toilet, but clothes, training pants, or cloth diapers can not be rinsed out. Store soiled items in a closed plastic bag and send home daily.

  • Dispose of soiled disposable diapers in a cleanable, plastic lined, covered container and remove to an exterior garbage area at least daily.

  • The children’s hands must be washed in the lavatory after each individual diaper change or infant's hands may be cleaned using single use, pre-moistened towelettes.

  • Caregivers must wash their hands after each individual diaper change.

  • Instructional signs must be posted showing proper diaper changing and hand washing techniques.
