Adult Health Screening Clinic Information
What services are provided in the Adult Health Screening Clinic?
Our emphasis is on early identification of problems and maintaining “wellness” by educating people about how to maintain good health and reduce their risk of getting sick. Adult men and women who come to the Adult Health Screening Clinic are checked for common diseases, including high blood pressure and heart disease, diabetes, and certain types of cancer.

This screening clinic is not intended to take the place of visits to a doctor. In most cases, if treatment for a problem is necessary, clients are referred to appropriate health care providers.

When a person comes to the Adult Health Screening Clinic, the following services will be provided:

  1. Health History – A Registered Nurse will talk to you about any health problems that you or close relatives have had in the past, or that you are currently experiencing.
  2. Laboratory Tests – Certain screening tests, including bloodwork will be offered based on your health history and risk factors for certain diseases.
  3. Screening Physical Examination – A head to toe examination intended to identify certain health problems, including:
  • Heart Disease
  • Obesity
  • Thyroid problems
  • Anemia
  • Cancers: Oral, skin, breast, cervical, testicular, prostate, rectal, colon
  • Hypertension (High Blood Pressure)
  • Diabetes
  • Sexually Transmitted Diseases (if indicated)
  • Urinary Tract Infection
  • Other Tests – Women who are at risk for breast cancer will be evaluated for the need of a mammogram. If indicated, a mammogram appointment will be offered through one of our contracting hospitals. Other tests may be offered by a clinician based on physical exam findings, which may require charges in addition to the base fee for a physical examination and included services.
  • Health Education – A primary focus of the Adult Health Clinic is on disease prevention and working toward a healthy lifestyle. Throughout a clinic visit, medical staff will talk with you about how to reduce your chances of getting life-threatening diseases and how to maintain good health.

What is not included in the Adult Health Screening Clinic examination?

Because our emphasis is on early identification and prevention, we do not provide treatment for most diseases and problems. We do not prescribe or pay for medicine or medical supplies.

When a need for treatment or follow-up with a physician or specialist is identified, a qualified clinician will be glad to refer you or assist in coordinating an appointment for you.

Are there any special qualifications for the Adult Health Screening Clinic?
The Adult Health Screening Clinic is open to all adult men, and adult women who are beyond childbearing years (or have had a sterilization procedure or have a spouse who has). There are no income restrictions for eligibility.

How much does an appointment for the Adult Health Screening Clinic cost?
Many people come to the Adult Health Clinic because the fees for services are very reasonable. The fee for an Adult Health Clinic examination and associated services is based on a variable (sliding) scale depending on household size and total gross household income. Adult Health Clinic minimum fee is 25$ – not including fees for additional services and tests. Clients will be notified of any additional charge and may choose whether or not they want the additional test or service.

Please call the Macon County Public Health Center at (828) 349-2081 if you would like to know more about how to get an Adult Health Screening Clinic appointment.
